Where to Find Your Certified Mail Tracking Number

The form numbers the Post Office offers can be a little confusing. The forms you probably used are PS Form 3800, or PS Form 3811 if you also requested a paper Return Receipt, shown below. PS Form 3800 is the Certified Mail form; PS Form 3811 is the optional receipt card that uses the same article number.

Find the long tracking number printed beside the barcode on PS Form 3800 or your USPS receipt, and enter it exactly as shown.

Online services

If you used an online service, we obviously recommend The Letter Pilot, you may have received an automated email containing your tracking information. You can also head to your dashboard, where all of the mail you've sent is displayed with easy tracking.

Other Tracking Methods

If you would rather not track online, USPS also gives you a couple of other ways to check on a Certified Mail piece.

You can call 1-800-ASK-USPS (1-800-275-8777) and follow the automated prompts with your tracking number ready. It is handy when you are away from your computer or just prefer to hear the update instead of looking it up.

You can also text your tracking number to 28777 (2USPS) for a status update. Adding AA after the tracking number requests the complete activity history, which can be useful if you are trying to see where the letter has been.

What Each Certified Mail Tracking Status Means

Understanding certified mail tracking statuses helps you know exactly where your letter is:

What “Notice Left” Means

If your tracking information says Notice Left, a carrier attempted delivery but could not complete it. For Certified Mail, that usually means no one was available to sign for the letter. Here's another form to remember, just kidding, you do not have to: PS Form 3849. It is simply the notice USPS leaves when an item could not be delivered.

This is one of the forms I got a few weeks ago because I was not available to answer the door. You can scan the QR code on your own notice, or use the USPS Redelivery page, to request another delivery attempt. Your tracking number still works in the tracking tools above if you want to check the latest status first.

You can also choose pickup at your local Post Office. Do not let it sit too long: Certified Mail and other extra-service mail is generally held for 15 days before USPS returns it to the sender, unless the sender specified a shorter period. USPS explains the redelivery and pickup options in its Redelivery guidance.
