Quick answer

First-Class Mail is the USPS service most people mean when they say "send a letter." It covers envelopes, postcards, and large flats up to 13 ounces, delivers in 1–5 business days, and starts at $0.78 for a 1 oz letter in 2026. It includes free forwarding and return-to-sender, but does not include tracking unless you add Certified Mail.

First-Class Mail in plain English

First-Class Mail is the everyday letter and lightweight-envelope service the United States Postal Service has offered for over a century. If you put a Forever stamp on a regular envelope and drop it in a blue box, you are sending First-Class Mail. It is the default option at the Post Office counter, and it is what every Forever stamp is priced for.

The service has three things going for it that none of the cheaper bulk options match:

  • Speed: 1–5 business days nationwide. Most local mail arrives next day.
  • Free forwarding and return: If the recipient moved and filed a Change of Address, USPS forwards the piece for free for up to 12 months. If the address is wrong, it comes back to you free of charge.
  • Privacy: First-Class Mail is sealed against inspection without a warrant under federal law — bulk Marketing Mail is not.

Anything labeled simply "a stamp" or "regular mail" is, almost always, First-Class Mail.

What actually qualifies as First-Class Mail

USPS recognizes three shape categories under the First-Class Mail umbrella. The shape determines the price:

ShapeSize limitsWeight limitStarting price (2026)
Postcard3.5″ × 5″ min, 4.25″ × 6″ maxN/A (paper only)$0.61
Letter (envelope)3.5″ × 5″ min, 6.125″ × 11.5″ max3.5 oz$0.78
Large envelope (flat)Over 6.125″ × 11.5″, up to 12″ × 15″13 oz$1.63

What does NOT qualify:

  • Packages. First-Class Package Service was retired in mid-2023. Anything in a box now ships under USPS Ground Advantage or Priority Mail.
  • Anything over 13 oz. Heavier flats must ship Priority Mail or Ground Advantage.
  • Square or unusually shaped envelopes. They still travel under First-Class but pay the non-machinable surcharge ($1.27 minimum) because USPS sorting machines cannot run them.
  • Bulk advertising. Promotional mailers in lots of 200+ go via Marketing Mail, not First-Class — even if they look identical.

How long First-Class Mail takes

USPS targets 1–5 business days for First-Class Mail. Actual transit time depends on distance and the time of day USPS picks the piece up.

  • Local (same metro): Usually 1–2 business days. Drop a piece by 5pm and it often arrives next day.
  • Regional (within ~600 miles): 2–3 business days.
  • Coast to coast: 3–5 business days.
  • To Alaska, Hawaii, or US territories: Add 1–3 days.

One thing First-Class Mail does not include is a delivery guarantee. If your piece is late, USPS will not refund the postage. Only Priority Mail Express comes with a money-back date guarantee. For more on transit windows, see our USPS mail delivery times guide.

First-Class Mail vs Marketing Mail (Standard)

The most common mix-up online — and the question SERPs for "what is first class mail" really want answered — is the difference between First-Class Mail and what USPS used to call "Standard Mail." That class was renamed USPS Marketing Mail back in 2017, but plenty of articles still call it Standard.

FeatureFirst-Class MailUSPS Marketing Mail
Delivery time1–5 business days3–10+ days, no commitment
Minimum quantity1 piece200 pieces (or 50 lb)
Allowed contentsAnything legal: letters, bills, personal correspondenceAdvertising and promotional only
Free forwardingYes (up to 12 months)No (extra fee)
Free return-to-senderYesNo (piece is recycled)
Sealed against inspectionYes (federal law)No
Starting price (1 oz letter)$0.78~$0.20–$0.35 with bulk discount

The rule of thumb: If you are sending a personal letter, an invoice, a check, a legal notice, or anything time-sensitive, you must use First-Class Mail (or higher). Marketing Mail is reserved for advertisers who send 200+ identical pieces and accept slower delivery in exchange for a steep discount. Putting personal correspondence in a Marketing Mail flow is a postal violation.

First-Class Mail vs Priority Mail

The other common comparison: First-Class Mail vs Priority Mail. They both deliver fast, but they serve different shapes and weights.

  • First-Class Mail is for letters and flats up to 13 oz. Cheap ($0.78 for a letter), no tracking by default.
  • Priority Mail is for packages and heavier flats. Starts at $11.65, includes free tracking and $100 of insurance, delivers in 1–3 business days.

For a side-by-side, see First-Class vs Priority Mail.

Does First-Class Mail include tracking?

No — not by default. A standard First-Class letter or postcard has no tracking number, no scan history, and no proof of delivery. If you need any of those, add a service:

  • Certified Mail — adds tracking + proof of mailing + a delivery scan. About $5.30 on top of postage. See our Certified Mail guide.
  • Certificate of Mailing — cheaper, ~$1.95. Proves you mailed it on date X, but no delivery scan or tracking number.
  • Registered Mail — the highest-security option for valuables. Slow but airtight chain of custody.
  • Return Receipt — signed proof of delivery, electronic ($2.82) or physical green card ($4.40).

People sometimes confuse First-Class Mail with USPS Ground Advantage (which does include free tracking). Ground Advantage is the package service that replaced First-Class Package in 2023 — it is its own class, not a subset of First-Class.

Forever stamps and First-Class Mail

A Forever stamp is a First-Class postage stamp sold at the current 1 oz letter rate, valid for a standard 1 oz First-Class letter forever — even after rate increases.

Concrete example: a Forever stamp bought for $0.55 in 2019 is still valid for a 1 oz First-Class letter today, even though that same stamp now sells for $0.78. You do not have to add the difference. The face value is irrelevant once it is on the envelope.

Two practical notes:

  • Forever stamps cover 1 oz only. A 2 oz letter still needs an extra $0.29 in postage on top of the Forever stamp.
  • Forever stamps are not postcards (those are $0.61, not $0.78). A Forever stamp on a postcard is overpaying by $0.17 — not illegal, just wasteful.
